Bible passages that talk about money

The Bible has over 31,102 verses in the New & Old Testaments; some specifically talk about money. There are a lot of passages that deal with money from many different angles.

Let’s go through a few bible verses that support the responsible stewardship of money, planning, saving, and giving, and trusting that the Lord will provide; that he will answer your prayers.

“The blessing of the Lord makes rich, and he adds no sorrow with it.” – Proverbs 10:22

“Wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it.” – Proverbs 13:11

“A slack hand causes poverty, but the hand of the diligent makes rich.” – Proverbs 10:4

“Precious treasure and oil are in a wise man’s dwelling, but a foolish man devours it.” –Proverbs 21:20

“In all toil there is profit, but mere talk tends only to poverty.” Proverbs 14:23

“The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty.” – Proverbs 21:5

“On the first day of every week, each of you is to put something aside and store it up, as he may prosper, so that there will be no collecting when I come.” – Corinthians 16:2

“And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:19

“Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” – Mathew 6:31

“Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.” – Peter 5:6

“Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.” – Romans 13:8

Note: I picked these passages because they support praying for financial wellness, stability, and good stewardship. But I’m sure that there are many passages that discredit this. Remember, the Bible has over 31,000 verses. People find what they are searching for, so if you’re looking for the bad, you will surely find it.

Doesn’t the Bible say that money is bad?

Wait, isn’t praying for money a bad thing?

People have often popularized the idea that The Bible says money is bad. They go off the often quoted verse, Timothy 6:10 – “money is the root of all evil.”

While it does say that, the most important emphasis has been left out. The full verse reads…

“For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”

It’s the love of money, not just “money.” So if you pursue money to the detriment of your faith, kindness, and family, then that’s not so good.

Furthermore, Ecclesiastes 5:10-12 states that…

“He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves wealth with his income; this also is vanity. When goods increase, they increase who eat them, and what advantage has their owner but to see them with his eyes? Sweet is the sleep of a laborer, whether he eats little or much, but the full stomach of the rich will not let him sleep.”

Proverbs 22:16 says…

“Whoever oppresses the poor to increase his own wealth, or gives to the rich, will only come to poverty.”

Again, it’s the distinction of the love of money (the abuse of financial gain/power), not the fact that we want money to help us and our families live a worthy life. So I don’t want you to feel that asking for help and guidance through prayer is going against what the Bible says.

In fact, Malachi 3:10 says…

“Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.”

So it seems you are encouraged to put your faith in the Lord’s power and blessings.

Why would you want to offer a prayer for finances?

Our finances can be so overwhelming at times we don’t know which way to turn or how to move forward. We want this weight to be lifted from us so badly, but right now, when you’re deep in the middle of it, you can’t see the light.

Sometimes you just need to give up control and let something higher than yourself take over for the time. There’s comfort in knowing that you are being looked over and that His presence is there for you to draw strength from.

Offering a powerful prayer for finances can lighten your burden, as voicing your worries and releasing them to something higher can give you comfort.

How do you pray for finances?

  • Step One: Be in a state of peace, calm & reflection.
  • Step Two: Know what you are struggling with and what is at the root of your financial anxiety (not just the symptom).
  • Step Three: Ask for guidance, clarity, courage, perseverance, and patience.
  • Step Four: Ask for a financial blessing & abundance, whatever you need to be able to manage your finances better.
  • Step Five: Thank God for all the blessings and guidance he will provide.
  • Step Six: Reaffirm your faith in His love and commitment.
  • Step Seven: Follow through with what you have been guided to do, and trust that everything will work out.

What if I’m not sure if I believe in God?

Many people find comfort in believing in the Lord; for many, the power of God and Jesus Christ is absolute. Others are skeptical that God exists, or they believe in a completely different religion and belief system.

Whatever you believe in, hold that faith close. For the purpose of this post, we’re aligned with the faith of Christianity.

Maybe this can be the start (or renew) of your spiritual growth and faith in the Lord. Or maybe you can use the prayers here as a starting point for creating your own, for your own belief system.

If you know that following Christianity isn’t true for your beliefs, but you like the idea of offering up a prayer to a higher being, then you should consider using some positive money affirmations.

Working on your money mindset can be extremely beneficial, and it’s for everyone, not just those of particular faiths.

America’s money stress – you’re not alone

Money can be a significant source of stress in our lives. By looking at some statistics, I want you to know and feel that you’re not alone. Many are going through the same financial struggles as you.

  • In a recent survey by The American Physiological Association, 65% of respondents said money is a significant source of stress.
  • CNBC reports on a recent Capital One survey that cites “that finances are the number-one cause of stress (73%) — more than politics (59%), work (49%) and family (46%).”
  • According to a FINRA survey, “60% of respondents indicated feeling anxious when thinking about their personal finances, while 50% of respondents indicated feeling stressed when discussing their finances. Major factors contributing to high levels of financial anxiety and stress include a lack of assets and insufficient income, high debt, money management challenges, and low financial literacy.”

While the percentages vary, the rates are all extremely high. If you’re reading this post, you most likely know all about the stress of money in your life.

At the end of the day

One of the biggest sources of stress and anxiety in people’s lives is their finances. Financial problems can affect all aspects of life and can lead to worry, fear, and hopelessness. However, one way to alleviate these negative emotions is through prayer. By praying for a financial miracle and trusting that God will provide, we can reduce our fears and anxieties and find peace and contentment.

It’s important to remember that financial troubles are a common experience, and many people have overcome them by relying on their faith and seeking God’s guidance.
