My #1 tip for finding beautiful elements, templates, and designs is to check out premade templates or design elements – such as fonts, graphics, digital papers, templates, etc.

Using these premade elements can speed up your design process so much. Check out Creative Fabrica for awesome social media templates; using these can save you hours of design work. They offer millions of design elements, so you’ll be sure to find exactly what you need.

Custom Etsy digital products

These digital products aren’t as passive as other options. Yet they’re a lot of fun to make and a great option if you want to build a repeat customer.

For this, you would want to make a generic listing and then have lots of drop-down menus for people to make their custom selections.

For example, I bought these Disney princess-inspired digital prints

(see it on Etsy)

You choose the listing with the number of prints you want and then you have to choose…

  • Instant digital download or print
  • Paper sheen (if printed)
  • Which princesses
  • Color palette
  • Shipping upgrade (if printed)

Here are the digital downloads that I got from the above Etsy listing for my daughter’s bathroom. (it’s hard to see from the pic, but they’re a beautiful mix of pink and silver glitter).

You can do the same for custom Etsy digital downloads, they can be…

  • Monograms
  • Stationary
  • Wall art (like what I bought, shown above)
  • Silhouettes
  • Quotes

What digital products should I sell?

Creating digital download printables is usually the easiest to start with when considering digital products, others being online courses, spreadsheets, video series, etc. So it’s best to start with the easier first and work up to more involved digital products.

This post, the one that you’re reading, is part of a series on digital products. Part one is all about actually creating printables, while this post goes into all the different kinds of digital products you can make. Let’s do a super quick debrief of that first post, but be sure to go and read the whole post if you go with printables.

Step 1 – Define your target audience

The first step in creating digital products is to identify your target audience. This is important because you need to know who you’re creating these products for.

Are you targeting men or women? What age group? What interests do they have? These are all important questions that will help you create products that your target market will actually want.

Step 2 – Brainstorm product ideas

Once you know who your target audience is, it’s time to start brainstorming product ideas.

Again, think about what your target market would want and need. What kind of problems do they have that you could help solve?

For example, if you’re targeting busy moms, you could create a meal planning templates to help them organize a typically huge headache for moms.

Step 3 – Do product research

After you have a list of potential product ideas, it’s time to start researching. The goal here is to determine if there’s a demand for the products you want to create.

You can search for similar Etsy digital downloads and other sites like Amazon, Google, and Pinterest. Spend just a couple of hours on this step.

Find out what your competitors are making…

  • What’s their style?
  • What features do their products offer?
  • What are they missing?
  • What complementary products are there?

Initially, you should aim to make at least 7-10 printables to help create a “full Etsy shop.” Offering 1-2 products looks limiting. So narrow down the options you thought looked interesting, and let’s get started with those.

Step 4 – Create your products

Now it’s time to start creating your products! This is where the fun begins. If you followed steps 1-3, then this part should be pretty easy because you already know what you need to create and who you need to create it for.

But if you’re brand new to making printables, check out the resources at the end of the post to learn how to make them in a snap!

Etsy shop idea – does a digital product make sense?

If you already have an Etsy Shop…

If you already have an Etsy shop that sells a physical product, you can easily add a digital product to your mix, which can be very profitable. You can teach people how to make what you sell.

Wait… I know this sounds counterproductive because why would someone buy a product from you when they can make it themselves? It’s a fair question; let’s dig into this.

People like projects, especially crafty ones. They love what you make, but they are looking for a project to do. Either as a hobby on their own or with a friend or their child.

So why not sell them exactly what they are looking to buy? You can sell them…

  • Patterns to knit/sew/crochet your cute XYZ
  • Your recipe for making lavender rosemary soap (complete with insider tips and resources to get the best supplies).
  • A how-to video series on using a Cricut (you can learn all you need to know in Cricut’s App learning center)

Yet, many people prefer to buy the finished product because you (as the expert creator) have the time to perfect your craft, and they don’t. You’ve put in the long hours to make a product that is top quality, and they value that. They are happy to pay you for your time and effort to save themselves the headache of learning a new skill.

So you can see that both aspects are viable products; the physical product and the digital product.

If you don’t have an Etsy shop yet…

Starting from the beginning is so exciting as the possibilities are endless! If you’d like to combine physical and digital products, check out these ideas for the Top 25 Etsy Shop Ideas to help jumpstart your brainstorming.

Write down what interests you, what you have experience in, and then brainstorm all the printable templates and digital product possibilities.

Where to learn to make Etsy digital products

Now that you have an idea of all possible printables, it’s time to learn how to make them! You can find many free resources online (like this post) to help you get started.

If you want to learn the basics of graphic design, Canva is a great place to start. They have a ton of free templates for you to mess around with so you can see each element and how they come together to make a great design.

However, if you want to fast-track your new digital products online business, you don’t want to waste time trying to piece all the small tidbits you get from free resources.

What you want is to find a great teacher, someone who knows the business from experience and can show you exactly what to do, and more importantly, what not to do. I have taken courses from two great digital product creators, and I know either of these ladies will take you exactly where you want to go with your printables creation.

Gold City Ventures E-Printables Side Hustle Course

If you’re brand new to printables and have no idea where to start, or maybe you’re a little bit further along in your journey, and you *have* made some things to sell…but you’re not seeing the sales you want, and you feel like it’s just too competitive out there.

I’m here to tell you that it IS possible to make good money selling digital products on Etsy… but you have to have a plan. You can’t just wing it and hope for the best.

But how do I know it’s profitable? Because Julie & Cody from Gold City Ventures have done it themselves, and we’re talking seven-figure revenue here! (that’s a lot of zeros!)

They created a hugely popular E-Printables Side Hustle course, which shows you exactly how to do what they did. This is a step-by-step guide that covers everything you need to know to get started selling printables on Etsy.

In this course, you’ll learn how to:

  • Create designs from scratch in several different programs
  • Research best-selling digital product ideas for Etsy using eRank
  • Drive sales with keyword research and our seasonal product strategy
  • Optimize your time to get more products listed faster
  • And so much more!

One of the best parts of the course is that they show how to make a ton of printables with over-the-shoulder videos; you get to watch it step by step (and you can make your own at the same time). It couldn’t be easier. Well, it does get easier because, in addition to showing you how to make it, they give you 20 free templates that you can use today to make your own digital products.

They also have a massive module on doing keyword research (which is one of the most important things when selling on Etsy. This step ensures that you are making what’s selling and that customers find what you’re selling when they search for a product.

Doing keyword research is a fine art, so don’t skip this step when starting your shop. If you do, you could risk spending hundreds of hours on your shop and seeing only a few sales, which can be very discouraging.

Another thing that I really liked about the course is that they go through all the legal speak when using templates, graphics, fonts, etc. As there are a ton of details you need to know about using & selling templates (i.e., commercial licenses vs. limited vs. personal use, etc.). You never want to be on the receiving end of a letter that says you owe someone $3,000 for using their content in your printables! Yikes!

The E-Printables Side Hustle Course is only open a few times a year, so if you’re interested, be sure to check it out ASAP, as you don’t want to miss the open course window! (They have a waitlist to get on, so you’ll be notified when they open the doors).

If you’re not sure if making printables is right for you (but you’re curious), be sure to check out their free workshop, where you’ll get the cliff notes (along with some great insider tips) on selling printables on Etsy. This can help you decide if this is the right side hustle for you.

Or, if you already have an Etsy printables shop and want to uplevel your offerings, you can grab their free eBook, The Seasonal Products Secret, on making massive sales with seasonal printables.

Tracie Fobes

I didn’t come across Tracie until a year into my journey, and I’m bummed that I didn’t seek her out sooner, as she was exactly what I needed.

I made significant progress in my printables business after starting with Tracie’s program! I made printables, budgeting sheets, savings trackers, and mini workbooks. You can see a mock-up of what I made with the help of Tracie’s course below, it’s my Sinking Funds Simplified Workbook.

sinking fund tracker and workbook planner

Tracie has two printable courses for you, which is fantastic because we all have different skill sets when starting out.

If you’re brand new to printables, then check out Easy Printables. It’s a great introductory course that shows you what you need to get going to brainstorm your printable ideas. It goes into style & designing your printables and how to create them on four different platforms so you can pick which is best for you.

This is an introductory course, it’s fairly small in scope, so if you want the full beginning-to-end guide on how to make and sell printables, you’ll want to check out Product Perfection. This is a more robust course; it goes over some of the same info as the first but extends into…

  • Larger digital products (more than just a couple of pages, large planners, workbooks, etc.)
  • How to price your digital product
  • Legally protecting your work
  • Creating mock-ups of your printables
  • Sales platforms
  • Sales strategies to help convert the customer

If you’re interested in exploring the idea of making & selling printables, but aren’t sure enough to buy a course, then be sure to check out Tracie’s free Digital Product Planner workbook to help you get a better idea if it’s for you.

Monica Froese

Monica’s program, The Empowered Business Lab, is the next level up from Tracie’s course. Not only will you learn how to produce printables, but you’ll also learn about various other digital downloads, like spreadsheets for example.

Monica takes you through creating printables and the training you need to use sales funnels to achieve high conversions. (She’s a funnel queen when it comes to selling!)

This course is the full meal deal, and it’s everything you want (and all the things you didn’t even know about but are so glad you now know about). Her course walks you through…

  • Validating your printable ideas
  • Getting your business mindset right
  • Business goal setting
  • Creating your digital product (with video tutorials)
  • Pricing your products
  • Setting up sales funnels for your products
  • Creating an irresistible offer that customers can’t say no to
  • Organic sales strategies for long-term growth
  • Building landing pages for your larger digital products
  • Email nurture sequences
  • + bonus templates, social media graphics, email swipe copy, and more!

Monica knows that The Empowered Business Lab is what will take your digital product creation to the next level, so it’s priced accordingly (it’s not cheap). However, she periodically runs promotions on it, so it’s a great bargain if you see it for more than 40% off!

Monica also offers a free training, showing you how she made almost $40k with a $27 digital product!

I’ve taken two of Monica’s programs, and they’ve both been amazing. Monica explains everything step-by-step (there’s no guessing involved), making her lessons ideal for individuals who are scared by a topic as large as this. Her courses were well structured and professional, with great bonuses all the time!

Why Sell Digital Products on Etsy?

Etsy is a great place to sell digital files because it has a built-in audience of millions of buyers who are already interested in buying exactly what you want to sell!

Plus, Etsy is a great platform for those new to digital product creation. Etsy takes care of the transactional aspect, while you can focus on learning and perfecting your printable templates and learning your customer’s needs.

However, selling Etsy printables isn’t all sunshine and 50-dollar bills. The exact thing that makes Etsy ideal (a large customer base) also means that there’s higher competition on the platform.

There are many small shops on the platform, probably very similar to what you want to do. So you need to be strategic, learn to differentiate your listings, and have a great plan.

Other places to sell digital downloads

If you’re not sure that Etsy is for you, there are some other places that you can look to for selling digital products.

Your own website

You can sell your products on your own WordPress site. You will need to set up an eCommerce plugin like WooCommerce or Easy Digital Downloads. I recommend Easy Digital Downloads as it integrates well with SendOwl (which is what I use to deliver my products).

SendOwl is a platform that allows you to sell digital products on your own website and social media platforms; you just add a link on your site, which send you over to SendOwl to complete the transaction. This platform is good for those that use landing pages and tripwires; it’s not a traditional store where you see a page with multiple listings.

Shopify

If you want to sell physical and digital products, then Shopify is a great option. You can create a beautiful online store with Shopify. (I use this platform to sell my smaller digital products that don’t need a sales page. You can see The Shop and what a Shopify store looks like right here.

This platform is a good option if you have a lot of listings (similar to an Etsy-style shop), but without all the fees that Etsy charges.

Bonanza

Bonanza is another marketplace similar to Etsy but with a focus on simplicity. You can sell physical or digital goods here.

“We provide one-click publishing to all major buyer channels (i.e. eBay, Amazon, etc) and we pay all advertising costs on your behalf until you make a sale.”

Creative Market

Creative Market is a great platform for selling graphics, fonts, templates, and other creative products when selling to the business-to-business market. They have a huge audience of creative individuals that are looking for new products to help them with their own small businesses.

Storenvy

Storenvy is a platform that allows you to create your online store, similar to Etsy. Yet, they also offer a social marketplace for people to discover your goods. One of the best aspects is that they have a free plan for those starting.

Selling digital products on Etsy FAQs:

While we covered a lot of info in this post on what digital products to sell on the Etsy marketplace, I know you may still have a few questions.

How do digital downloads work on Etsy?

You design something and upload it to your Etsy shop. When a customer buys it, they get sent a download link for them to download a copy of the item. They can then print it, use it digitally, or however its intended use is.

I’m lost for what to make? How do I figure it out?

It’s always best to start with what you’re good at. What do people come to you for help with? Cooking, organizing, design? Once you have an idea of what it is that people come to you for, then you can start reverse-engineering the process.

For example, if you’re good at cooking, you could make a PDF with your family’s favorite recipes or meal plans. Or make an Amazon list of your favorite pantry staples and cooking tools.

What if I’m not tech-savvy? Can I still make digital products?

The great thing about digital products is that you don’t need to be tech-savvy to create them. In fact, many people are surprised at just how easy it is to create digital products.
There are a ton of programs out there that make it easy to design and create digital products. Canva is one of my personal favorites because it’s so easy.

If you are technophobic, I highly suggest you check out one of the online courses from Tracie & Monica I mentioned above. They go through everything step by step, usually with video. So you can see how they do everything. You are never left confused or stuck as to how to make something.

What if I’m not good at creating or designing?

I feel ya; I can barely draw a stick figure myself. But that doesn’t mean you need to give up on the idea of earning passive income with digital products. You can always veer towards making spreadsheets or an eBook.

You can also hire a designer on Fiverr to bring your idea to life. You just need to sketch out a rough idea of what it should look like and provide detailed content.

Or, an even easier route is to focus on Private Label Rights content. PLR is fast becoming one of the easiest ways (and a profitable business on its own). This is where other people design a full printable product, and you buy the rights to sell it under your own brand.

Remember to check out Creative Fabrica for beautiful templates and design elements. They’re inexpensive and easy to add (make sure you check out that the design you want is available for commercial use!

What digital downloads make the most money on Etsy?

Well, that depends on your strategy. You can make a very low-cost item (i.e., macro tracker) and sell it a bunch, or you can make a high-ticket item (i.e., digital printable art) and hope to sell it a couple of times.

With a tracker, you could sell it for $1.99. While for digital art, you can sell for hundreds (even thousands – if it’s really good).

If you really don’t want to do the designing or creating part of the business, but like the idea of selling digital downloads, consider using PLR products to sell in your shop.

Designers create these products, which are ready to sell along with the resale rights. So you can start selling completed products in just a few hours!

Wait, why a few hours? If it’s ready to sell can’t you just sell it as is? Well, you could if you wanted to sell it on your own site. Etsy likes handmade goods, meaning you need to create them. So with PLR printables, you’d want to change them some to make them “your own.”

So adjusting colors, fonts, images, adding a few pages, taking some others away, etc. So buying a PLR product gets you 90% of the way done when you want to sell on the Etsy platform.

You can get started with these free PLR downloads and use them in just a few clicks.

Do digital products sell well on Etsy?

The answer is a resounding YES! Etsy loves digital goods, and they are one of the top marketplaces that customers go to for digital products!

For example, planners are hot right now! Here are the details (according to EtsyHunt).

  • Top keyword – planner, digital planner, planner stickers, budget planner, planners, daily planner, printable planner, wedding planner, weekly planner, planner printable.

Now think if you add in digital/printable journals, digital stickers, etc. You can easily create a digital catalog full of offerings. You can find out everything you want to know about making stickers to sell on Etsy right here.

As you can see from the rankings below, you might want to consider a student planner, digital planner + year, or a minimal planner as they have less competition.

Is it hard to learn the Etsy platform?

Etsy is a pretty user-friendly platform. You can sign up for a free account and become an Etsy seller in just a few minutes. And, if you do have any questions, Etsy has an amazing support team that is always willing to help.

There are lots of YouTube videos on how to open an Etsy shop. Yet, when you get to the listings aspect and need to do keyword research (Etsy SEO), you should look only to proven Etsy gurus.

How do you handle returns on digital products like printables?

This is a great question and one that a lot of people are confused about. When you sell digital products on Etsy, there are typically no returns. You should state this very clearly on each listing and in your Etsy shop seller terms and conditions.

Why sell on Etsy vs. other platforms?

Etsy is one of the most popular marketplaces for digital products. And according to The Balance Small Business, it’s one of the top 10 sites people go to when looking for printables.

The main benefit of selling on Etsy is that they have a huge customer base. Business of App reports that “Etsy has increased revenue and usage every year since its IPO in 2010, but the coronavirus pandemic supercharged its growth, from $818 million revenue in 2019 to $1.72 billion in 2020. Etsy also doubled active buyers in that time period.”

The other main benefit is that it’s a very user-friendly platform with lots of customer support and tutorials on how to do everything!

At the end of the day

If you’re looking for a way to make some extra money, you should absolutely consider creating digital products to sell on Etsy. You can create a wide variety of products that appeal to a huge built-in customer base.

And since digital products is an (almost) passive income stream, you can sit back and watch the sales come into your Etsy store without much effort. Have you tried this method for making money on Etsy? What tips would you share with others who want to try it out?

And if you’re unsure if making printables is right for you, check out the free trainings from Tracie and/or Monica to get a better idea of the process and your potential!
